SUMMARY:Écritures sonores en ethnomusicologie
LOCATION:MSH Mondes (bât. Weber)\, salle 2 (RDC)
DESCRIPTION:Reflections on podcast and sound documentary production practiceFredrik Mol
in & Pierre Prouteau\nOver the past 5 years, we have produced two sound
documentaries for academic projects and currently have one commissioned fo
r ARTE Radio. We come to this practice from complementary backgrounds: Pier
re from research on Southeast Asian music, Fredrik from working with diaspo
ric sound archives — most recently as Station Manager of SOAS Radio and thr
ough the EU-funded project DeCoSEAS (Decolonizing Southeast Asian Sound Arc
hives). Our first project together was DeCoSEAS Podcast (English, 2023), on
a week-long gathering of researchers, archivists and activists decolonizin
g Southeast Asian sound archives. The second, Sangkran magique (French, 202
5, INALCO), examined the omnipresence of 1960s music in contemporary Cambod
ia. The third, “untitled” (French, forthcoming 2026, co-produced with ARTE
Radio), is in post-production and continues the Cambodian thread started in
Sangkran magique.\nWhy make podcasts? What have we learnt from our project
s and collaborations? We will present our work and methodologies and how we
think about sound documentary as an alternative to text-based scholarly pr
oduction. Sound documentaries are an epistemological tool, as they can help
us rethink sound recordings in academia and in the discipline of ethnomusi
cology; as well as an experimental tool of creation and writing for researc
hers (so-called "research in sound" and other "sound essays"). We will shar
e excerpts from the work in progress and open a conversation on collaborati
ve sound documentary practice and the editorial demands of public broadcast
